For those who are unaware, the Philippines was hit by a typhoon this past weekend. To date, there have been 240 casualties. While this is a minimal number in comparison to Hurricane Katrina and the Southeast Asian typhoon a few years back, the impact of this flooding is just as devastating due to the sicknesses affected Filipinos will be faced with in terrible climate conditions. Moreover, another typhoon is predicted to hit this Friday to impede international rescue efforts for those stranded on their rooftops/reported missing.
This will be called the Balikbayan Box Drive. It will run for about a week and a half, starting this Wednesday, September 30, 2009 and ending next Friday, October 9, 2009. There will be approximately 5 "balikbayan" boxes to the approved areas on the Whittier Law School campus.

We will be accepting the following "in-kind" donations:
Food items: Rice, noodles, canned goods, sugar, iodized salt, cooking oil, monggo beans and potable water
Medicines: Paracetamol, antibiotics, analgesic, oral rehydration salts, multivitamins and medications to treat diarrheal diseases
Non-food items: Bath soaps, face towels, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, plastic mats, blankets, mosquito nets, jerry cans, water containers, water purification tablets, plastic sheetings, and Laundry soap
Rehabilitation Programs: Shelter materials for house repair
and clothes of any variety - people lost their homes and have been left with nothing.
Goods will be given to the ABS-CBN Foundation which will assure that the Philippine Red Cross receives these donations and distributes accordingly. I have also contacted USAID in case the Philippine Red Cross is overwhelmed with the distribution of international goods.
